What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that most commonly appear in the legs. They develop when the valves inside the vein walls stop working properly, causing blood to pool and the vein to bulge beneath the skin. Advanced untreated cases can progress to cause significant discomfort and, in some cases, significant complications including skin ulceration and bleeding.
Symptoms of varicose veins
Common symptoms include:
• Aching, heaviness, or throbbing in the legs — often worse at the end of the day
• Swollen ankles and feet
• Itching or a burning sensation around the affected vein
• Skin discolouration or hardening around the ankle
• Leg ulcers in advanced or long-standing cases
When to seek urgent advice
You should seek prompt medical assessment if you notice a hard, painful lump on a varicose vein (which may indicate a clot, known as superficial thrombophlebitis), or if a vein near the skin surface bleeds. Bleeding varicose veins can produce significant blood loss and should be treated as a medical emergency.
Treatment options

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA)
A fine catheter is guided into the affected vein under ultrasound imaging. Radiofrequency waves are then delivered to close the vein from within. RFA is the gold-standard treatment for larger varicose veins, offering excellent long-term results with minimal discomfort and rapid return to normal activity — typically within a few days.
Foam sclerotherapy
A chemical foam is injected directly into the varicose vein, causing the vein wall to collapse and the vein to be gradually reabsorbed by the body. This technique is particularly well-suited to smaller varicosities and thread veins, and can be used alongside RFA for comprehensive treatment.
Phlebectomy
In cases where varicose veins lie close to the skin surface, small sections of vein can be removed through tiny incisions using a hook-like instrument. This is often combined with RFA for a complete result.
